Gemstones have intrigued men for
the last 7000 years, and have been used as a sign of wealth, power
and status. The first known were amethyst, rock crystal, garnet,
amber, jade, coral, lapis lazuli, pearl, emerald and turquoise.
The idea of associating a special
gem for each month was possibly suggested by the original breastplate,
worn by Aaron (High Priest of the Hebrews) and made by Moses (Aaron's
brother) in about 1250 BC. Twelve gems were arranged in four rows
of three stones each and were subsequently linked with the twelve
signs of the Zodiac.
Aquarius - Jan 20 to Feb 18 -
Garnet

was said to protect the wearer from all manner of poisons,
cure depression and prevent nightmares.

to be in India where tiny diamonds were sprinkled over
a baby's head at its naming ceremony. By so doing the
child assumed qualities of virtue and purity. It also
had the power to protect the wearer from evil especially
when worn on the left side. This belief could have added
to the popularity of diamonds being used in engagement
rings.

- Brahma a heavenly blue, Vishnu gold and Shiva red, but
